For years in recent times, it has been a tradition for some corporate organizations, philanthropic bodies and entertainment outfits to organize world class musical concerts as part of the Christmas celebrations. Such musical shows feature A - list international artistes and musicians. Sadly such events which millions of Nigerians look forward to as a means of partying and unwinding after a long year’s hustle has been threatened by the
security challenges and threats facing the country from the Boko haram sect. The Star mega Jam organized by Nigerian breweries which is one of the countries’ biggest shows was cancelled. The show has featured the likes of 50 cent, Fat Joe, R. Kelly and Kofi Olomide in the past and was to have Diddy Dirty money aka Puff daddy as leading act this year. Also, the Experience another large, annual open air concert was made a private and strictly by invitation event thus depriving millions of would be guests the opportunity to see Don Moen, Ron Kelony, Mary Mary and their favourite gospel stars.
On the heels of the situation is a warning issued by the American embassy to its musicians advising them against performing in Nigeria during the Christmas season due to the threats made by Boko Haram. The whole events is likely to impact negatively on the Nigerian entertainment and tourism industries and could lead to a decline in the culture of people going to celebrate Christmas in public places for fear of being attacked by the Boko Haram sect.
