Wow… It’s almost the end of the year. While thinking of what to write for my blog today, an idea crept into my head. Why not do the best-selling albums of the year? I said nope. That would be too time consuming as I would need to do lots of research and compile statistics. So for today, I’ll give you the top 10 songs in Naija for 2011 and maybe later do the best selling Nigerian albums. Here is my pick for the chart busters of 2011. Feel free to let me know who you feel should be there and who shouldn’t be.In no particular order,1. Oliver Twist by D’banj: This song came at the heights of the Mo ‘hits -good music deal and generated lots of buzz even before its release. Produced by no other than Don Baba Jay aka Don Jazzy. D’banj publicly confesses his love for Beyoncé, Rihanna, Genevieve and Omotola. How can one man wish to have all this women? D’banj you’re truly an Oliver Twist.
2. Super Star by Ice Prince: Following the success of Oleku with Brymo, this choc boy released another club banger from the E.LI. album Superstar is a song Ice Prince talks about the celebrity and party life. I never liked this song at first but it stuck when it was a choice of all DJs in the club.
3. Kelekele Love by Tiwa Savage: All of a sudden, a beautiful singer just took over the Nigerian music scene. Where did she come from? The fact is she is talented and the choice for a collaboration for most Nigerian musicians. Kelekele love is a toast of the Nigerian ladies. Tiwa has managed to win so many awards despite being a newcomer to the Nigerian music scene.
4. Pakurumo by Wizkid: This is another one from the controversial superstar. Another song off the album with a lot of hit songs. Wiz kid’s pakurumo is a mix of calypso and the African beat and is a toast of both the oldies and young folks alike.
5. CHOP MY MONEY BY P. SQUARE: an album from the 27 year old twins is not complete without a party song and a club banger. I’m sure the ladies love the “chop my money” aspect of the song. Wink.
6. ARA by BRYMO: The first official single from the chap after being signed on to chocolate city. Brymo is the guy behind the chorus on IcePrince’s monster hit Oleku. Another club banger anytime any day. The euphoria of “Ara” is likely to extend into 2008.
7. BACK WHEN BY DAVIDO: This is another song from a newcomer that did very well in Nigeria in 2011. Davido’s song with Naeto C is a favourite of club lovers and the radio stations. He is a guy with lots of potentials in the Nigerian music scene.
8. AKPAKO BY TERRY G: The Akpako angel …sorry master is gifted when it comes to making hits. Terry G knows when to ring his trademark bell which never sounds out of place in his Akpako songs. Akpako was a hit in the streets and clubs but was never really played on radio.
9. MOLOWONONI BY SAMKLEF: What do you expect when a hit making beat maker collaborates with the finest beat blessers? Samklef, Wizkid, Ice prince and D’ prince (omoba) of Mo’ hits were really on point on this song; it’s my favourite anytime any day.
SUPERSUN BY BEZ: Another fine song from a fine singer and guitarist. Even though not popular on the streets, the remix with Eldee, Ice Prince and Eva is one of those rare classic Nigerian songs released in 2011.1. OBOTOSHE BY SKAILEY… We might choose to ignore the song but cannot deny that this song was a massive hit on the streets of Lagos. Despite the randy lyrics, it’s still a favourite for the party lovers.
