From Yankee to Sango, to the streets of Accra, “everybody just de feel me”. That’s my remixed version of Davido’s hit single “Back when” which literally represents the happenings in the Nigerian music industry. (Davido is a new Nigerian musician).
Once a song becomes a hit in Lagos, it quickly spreads to other parts of Nigeria and makes an impact in other African countries like South Africa, Ghana and even Congo.
That same song can become a hit in parts of Europe especially the UK, Germany, Belgium and even the United states.
Yes! Nigerian music is not just international
as we already rule Africa but is gradually and surely taking over the world. Thanks to master craft in music production and fine artiste delivery plus that unique Naija swagger even 50 Cent wants to have. Those in the mainstream American music industry cannot deny the impact of Nigerian music on their careers as they get more respect when they brag of having performed in Naija. Those who have not been here really can’t wait to have a feel of the Nigerian hospitality. Call me bluff? What would you say about a Naija music festival that had A- class American stars from Jay z to Beyonce, Mary J Blige, R. Kelly, Brandy, Joe, Snoop Dogg, Akon and others in the same place at the same time outside their own shores? What about the marvellous collaborations between Yankee and Naija stars including D’banj and Snoop Dogg’s “Mr Endowed remix”; Kanye West and D’banj on scape goat remix also. Africa’s best music producer Don Jazzy has been on the beat for Jigga and Kanye, Akon has his version of Wizkid’s “Don’t dull”, Darey has a wonderful collaboration with Chammillionaire(a Nigerian) and 2Face Idibia plus other African stars who have another “collabo” with R.Kelly.
Let me not bother you with the likes of Nneka and Nas who have been repping for a long time and even those Nigerian musicians in Europe and America that have failed to pay cognizance to their motherland (Lemar, Seal and Sade Adu). I’ll use this medium to commend the likes of rapper Wale (Wale Folarin), Chidy bang and Femi Kuti who have been putting Naija on the world map.
Although we’ve won many awards from the MOBOs to Channel O Awards and the MTV MAMAS, it’s now time for a mainstream Nigerian musician wins the prestigious Grammy award. Also music investors like Sony BMI and Universal studios should invest in the Nigerian music and entertainment industries as there are loads of untapped potentials worth millions of dollars in both creative abilities and revenue.
I’ll call upon MTV and other entertainment media/ networks to focus more on the African entertainment scene and bring it to those who crave to know more in other parts of the world and commend the likes of NAIJA WHISTLE and Notjustok that have played a pivotal role in promoting the refined Naija sound.
