The Venice film festival is the world's oldest film festival and the 2011 event is the 68th edition and is directed by Marco Müller.
Activities lined up include a star studded red carpet event, film competitions,awards and premiere of some yet to be released films including pop star Madonna's W.E., a film about King Edward VIII's romance
with American divorcee Wallis Simpson also screens out of competition. It stars British actress Andrea Riseborough as Mrs Simpson.
Most films premiered at the festival clinch awards at the Oscars.
Celebrities to grace this year's event include the blue-eyed Clooney, US singer Madonna “The Godfather” star Al Pacino, other Hollywood stars and who is who in the movie and film industry.
The most prestigious awards are the Leone d'Oro (Golden Lion), which is awarded for best film, and the Coppa Volpi (Volpi Cup) for best actor and actress.
